Did your Dad, by chance, sing with "The Swinging Medallions" who became well known for the song "Double Shot of my baby's love?". I was a law clerk at the SC Attorney General's Office for a lawyer, who I think would have been about you Dad's age, who sang with that group. He later practiced law up in Greenville accident, but I think he has passed away. I think his name was Brent Fortson.
He did not sing in that band, but very much knew that band and his bands played with them at other shows! He currently sings in the band "Endless Summer" and they play regularly on the Columbia circuit!
Your recollections of your first year at Wake Forest did bring back memories of my Freshman year (1972-73) at Newberry College. I have often said that my alcohol consumption and fraternity parties contributed to me deciding on a career path change- from pre-ministerial (following in my Dad's footsteps) to law. I just couldn't see how I could continue to have so much fun becoming a pastor. It was further complicated by the fact that I was *going"'with a girl from my high school in Huntsville, Alabama, who was attending Auburn University. My family had been living in Huntsville at the time of my high school graduation, but had moved to Columbia, SC during the summer. I missed her immensely, but the almost daily trips to Bubba's (Martin St.) Beer Parlor, caused me to miss her less and, disturbingly, led to my enjoying a number of dates with sorority girls (Kappa Deltas and Alpha Xi Deltas). I was not very experienced dating in high school, so the alcohol gave me more confidence. In many ways, "it was the best of times and it was the worst of times". My college years helped me mature and grow up.

Though the years and the people change, it sounds like the college experience stays mostly the same!
